Environmental monitoring programmes

The Horns Rev project serves as a demonstration installation, and in connection with the studies of the environment completed so far, a decision has therefore been made to also study a number of additional factors:

The intense activity during construction – Will ships, barges and pile driving activities create a disturbance, and should the constructors take special action to protect animal life?

Sea floor flora and fauna – Will the plant and animal life along the sea floor in the site area change once the turbine foundations have been established?

Monitoring of fishes  - Will the turbine foundations attract fish? Will fishing in the area be attractive? Will there be a reef effect?

Monitoring porpoises – Are there porpoises at Horns Rev? If so, how will they react to the wind turbines?

Monitoring seals – Where do the curious seals at the Skallingen catch their fish? In the wind farm area?

Monitoring birds – The areas around Blåvands Huk are natural habitats for large numbers of migratory and resting birds. The area is categorised as an "area of international significance". Will the offshore wind farm have an impact on the birds? Is there a risk of collision with the wind turbines?
