Commissioning of turbines in full progress

Vestas and its sub-suppliers succeeded in finishing the turbine installation work two weeks ahead of schedule and now the activities revolve around making the final preparations for the commissioning of the turbines. At present Vestas employs 30 electricians and commissioning specialists at Horns Rev and the two crane vessels now act as hotel ships for Vestas' staff.

The electricians are sailed from turbine to turbine to finish the internal cable work inside the turbines. Following the electricians are the commissioning specialists who then execute thorough testing procedures to prepare the turbines for actual power production.

Elsam's staff is careful to be well ahead of Vestas' staff. It is the task of Elsam's staff to test the cables and connect the cables to the grid of the wind farm.

As of October 8, 2002 twenty turbines have been commissioned and are ready for power production.

Several teams are testing and commissioning the farm's remote monitoring and control system. The communication system has already been commissioned from ashore and to Eltra's substation. The connections are now made between the individual turbines and the substation via fibre optic cables in the farm's high-tension cables.

All 80 turbines of the farm should be commissioned by mid-November depending on the near-future weather conditions.

Almost 2 % of the total Danish electricity consumption - some statistics

The total annual, Danish electricity consumption  amounted to 34,913 GWh in 2001. The production from the Horns Rev wind farm is expected to reach 600,000,000 kWh corresponding to 600 GWh, which is 1.72 % of the total annual, Danish electricity consumption.

In Denmark the total electricity production from wind turbines amounted to 4,300 GWh in 2001 corresponding to 12.3 %. With the new capacity at Horns Rev alone, this figure will increase to 14 %. (source: Dansk Energi)

1.72 % of the total annual, Danish electricity consumption is to be covered by the production in the North Sea.

Monitoring via Elsam's control systems

The wind farm is equipped with state-of-the-art remote monitoring and control systems, which enable monitoring and control from all of Elsam's branches. Communication goes through built-in fibre optic cables. The signals are transmitted to a communication system located at Esbjergværket, Elsam's large central power plant in Esbjerg. From here technicians have access to detailed data for operating and maintenance purposes.

Environmental monitoring programmes

The environmental monitoring programmes started in the early construction phase and go on. Huge amounts of data have been and are still retrieved.

During the autumn of 2002 and the first months of winter these data will be processed to enable specialists to evaluate the impact of the constructions activities on the behaviour of animal life.

At present, special attention is on the behaviour of porpoises and seals as well as of birds in the wind farm area.

The environmental monitoring programmes have been carried out during the entire construction phase.

Environmental reports

All background reports from the EIA studies and most environmental reports are now publicly available  under Environmental Issues on this project home-page. The reports are in PDF format and can be downloaded from the page Environmental Reports.
